Living the Sabbatical Life with Lori Saitz

Lori Saitz is the founder and CEO of Zen Rabbit (zenrabbit.com) and host of the podcast, “Fine is a 4-Letter Word.” An award-winning writer, speaker, and broadcaster, Lori is on a mission to teach the world to be calm and grounded no matter what is going on.

I was excited to chat with Lori recently on the Love Middle Life podcast…LISTEN HERE!

So many women I talk to who are in mid-life take a long hard look at life and are asking themselves, “How can I make my life happier, more meaningful, more creative, more productive, more satisfying.” It is not a new phenomenon…we’ve been asking ourselves this for millennia. Seeking. Searching. Wanting to live our best lives…but what is that really?

Lori explores the beliefs that have been programmed and engrained in us since birth and stories we have told ourselves over and over.

Beliefs like:

  • You must work hard to succeed or make money.
  • Your worthiness is based on your productivity and level of achievement.
  • If you’re not doing something worthwhile all the time, you are lazy.
  • Fun or relaxation comes AFTER work, IF there’s time for it.
  • You have to keep up with or surpass everyone around you, like life is a race and there can only be one winner.

Lori proposes a new concept after relentless time on the proverbial hamster wheel: WORKING HARD IS NOT THE KEY TO SUCCESS.

She doesn’t propose that work is not required to achieve success. But she states that the part that gets overlooked by most people is that success can rarely be achieved without also taking a significant amount of time to stop DOING and simply BE.

Lori found herself exhausted and frustrated. She was burned out. So she made a bold move…she jumped off the hamster wheel.

Lori took a month off work. A month she called a kick off to living the sabbatical life. A month to reset!

She is quick to say that one doesn’t have to take an entire month off to start living the sabbatical life. And she shares five things you can do to kick off your own reset without even leaving your home!

  1. Rewire Your Brain
  2. Listen to Your Inner Voice
  3. Stop Caring What Other People Think
  4. Get a Hobby
  5. Practice Gratitude Daily

Humans thrive by exploring their strengths, motivations, likes and dislikes. To make a change in your life, employ an honest self-evaluation with these questions:

  • What life experiences have made me who am I today?
  • What could I instead invest my time and energy into each day?
  • What three values do I live by?
  • What is my mission in life?
  • What obstacles are standing in the way of me making a change in my life today?

These questions provoke creative thinking so you can get in touch with what truly drives you. Spend some time thinking about these things and you’ll start to get some clarity.

You are the master of your life. You are the one who can take steps to make your life what you really want it to be! Follow Lori and get inspired to live your very best life!

  1. Great perspective. I could’ve used that advice earlier in my life. But it’s a principle that can be applied any time.
