Why I’m All In on Choosing a Word of the Year
I used to think the whole “word of the year” thing was just another trendy exercise—a little cheesy and a lot unnecessary. But after years of dabbling in New Year’s resolutions that fizzled by February, I realized I needed something simpler, something powerful. A word. Just one.
Choosing a word for the year is like setting your internal GPS. It’s not about rigid goals or perfection; it’s about giving yourself a compass—a gentle nudge toward who you want to become and what you want to create.
For 2025, my word is FOCUS.
What FOCUS Means to Me
FOCUS is about more than just productivity (though I could definitely use help there). It’s about clarity, intention, and showing up fully for what matters most. Life gets loud, doesn’t it? Between work, family, grief, and the endless scroll of social media, it’s easy to feel like we’re being pulled in a million directions. FOCUS reminds me to pause, to ask myself, Is this where my energy belongs?
For me, FOCUS means:
- Prioritizing relationships. Deep conversations with my daughters, time spent with my parents, and nurturing my core circle.
- Pursuing my passions. Writing for Love Middle Life, creating content that resonates, and sharing stories that matter.
- Building financial freedom. Being intentional about spending, saving, and learning from financial mentors.
- Honoring my health. From morning mushroom coffee to AG1 greens, I’m focusing on the little things that keep me grounded and energized.
How to Find Your Word of the Year
If you’re new to this practice, don’t overthink it! Here’s how I narrowed it down:
- Reflect on the Past Year. What felt good? What didn’t? What’s missing in your life?
- Envision the Year Ahead. What do you want more of? Less of? What word would help you get there?
- Listen to Your Gut. Your word might surprise you. The first time I landed on a word, it almost felt like it chose me.

Making Your Word Work for You
It’s one thing to choose a word, but it’s another to make it part of your daily life. Here’s what I’ve learned:
- Write it down. Put it where you’ll see it—your phone wallpaper, a Post-it on your mirror, or even a charm bracelet.
- Set micro-goals. For FOCUS, I’m scheduling weekly planning sessions to stay on track.
- Talk about it. Share your word with someone you trust. Let them cheer you on.
